HC Deb 30 July 1982 vol 28 c750W
Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if the United Kingdom's signature to the United Nations law of the sea treaty would prejudice the United Kingdom's position in any international arbitration on the status of Rockall.

Mr. Rifkind

As I indicated in my reply to my hon. Friend the Member for Edinburgh, West (Lord James Douglas-Hamilton) on 12 July, we are examining the texts which have emerged from the law of the sea conference in the light of all the United Kingdom interests involved and the attitudes of other governments. Among the many aspects being considered is whether and how signature might affect arbitral proceedings concerning the Rockall area.
