Mr. Banks

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners in Her Majesty's prisons are serving life sentences; and how many have received remission and for what periods.

Mr. Mayhew

About 1,750 in England and Wales on 31 December 1981, including persons detained during Her Majesty's pleasure or for life under sections 53(1) and 53(2) of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933. Such prisoners are not eligible for remission.
