HC Deb 30 July 1982 vol 28 cc734-5W
Mr. Farr

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the total of pre-1902 schools in Leicestershire: what percentage this represents of the total of schools in Leicestershire; and how that figure compares with the percentage of pre-1902 schools nationally.

Dr. Boyson

Information about the ages of schools in Leicestershire is not readily available in the Department, and I suggest that my hon. Friend contacts the local education authority. The latest available national information, derived from the 1975 school building survey, which refers to maintained schools in England and Wales, is as follows:

Schools with permanent teaching accommodation built
Entirely Before 1903 Before 1903 plus some 1903 to 1945 Before 1903 plus some 1946 or later
Primary*—number 5,450 620 2,220
per cent 23.4 2.7 9.5
Secondary†—number 90 60 480
per cent 1.8 1.2 9.5
(*) Including middle deemed primary
(†) Including middle deemed secondary
(‡) Including schools with permanent buildings dating from all three periods: pre-1903, 1903–1945 and post-1945.
