HC Deb 30 July 1982 vol 28 cc758-9W
Mr. Cryer

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he is satisfied that the Health and Safety Commission publication SHW 18 on power press guards is satisfactory in all aspects; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Waddington

SHW 18 is currently under revision by the joint standing committee for safety in the use of power presses and it is anticipated that the final draft will be approved for publication at the meeting of the committee on 19 August 1982.

Mr. Cryer

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what standards the Minister is contemplating adopting for safety in power press regulations; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Waddington

There are no proposals at the present time to amend the Power Press Regulations 1965. The joint standing committee for safety in the use of power presses continues its work of preparing guidance on achieving safe standards in the use of power presses.

Mr. Cryer

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what representations he has received regarding the dangers arising from the application of Health and Safety Commission publication SHW 18 on power presses; and what action he has taken as a result.

Mr. Waddington

I have received a few representations alleging that the guidance in SHW 18 is inadequate. This publication has, however, been under revision since April 1981 by the power press joint standing committee which represents all the interests concerned. I have asked that this work now be completed as soon as possible.
