HC Deb 30 July 1982 vol 28 cc762-5W
Mr. Prescott

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list the total of employed persons in the Hull travel-to-work area for each year since 1970.

Mr. Alison

Statistics of the numbers of employees in employment are available from censuses of employment conducted annually from 1971 to 1978. Censuses were not taken in 1979 and 1980 and the results of the September 1981 census are not yet available. Following the reorganisation of local government in 1974, it was not possible to compile figures of the total numbers of employees in local areas for that year.

The available information is as follows:

Employees in employment in the Hull travel-to-work area
(000s)
June 1971 161.2
June 1972 161.5
June 1973 170.4
June 1974 Not available
June 1975 167.9
June 1976 168.5
June 1977 169.5
June 1978 165.6

Because of changes in the methods used to allocate employees to employment office areas in 1977 and again in 1978, the figures for these years are not strictly comparable with those for earlier years and no significance should be attached to small differences.

Mr. Prescott

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will give a breakdown of the age and duration of unemployment in the Hull travel-to-work area, the total and percentage for the month of June 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1982, and the vacancies available then.

Mr. Alison

Table 1 gives the age and duration analysis of registered unemployment in the Hull travel-to-work area at 15 April 1982, the latest date for which the information is available.

Table 2 gives the total numbers and percentage rates of unemployment and the numbers of notified vacancies remaining unfilled at June each year from 1978.

The vacancy statistics relate only to vacancies notified to employment offices and careers offices; vacancies notified to employment offices are estimated to be about one-third of all vacancies in the country as a whole. Because of possible duplication the figures for employment offices and careers offices should not be added together.

Mr. Prescott

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many jobs were lost in the industrial classification sectors of industries in Hull and Humberside, respectively, since June 1979.

Mr. Alison

The information is not available in the form requested. Comparison of the employee figures for different dates indicates net changes, but changes in levels of employment since 1979 are not available for Hull and Humberside.

Employee figures for local areas and counties are obtained from the census of employment and the most recent are for June 1978. No censuses were taken in 1979 and 1980 and information from the September 1981 census is not yet available.
