HC Deb 30 July 1982 vol 28 c730W
Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what projects have been submitted by the African Medical and Research Foundation to the Overseas Development Administration for funding, since June 1979; which projects were accepted; and what is the estimated cost of those accepted.

Mr. Neil Marten

An accountable grant of up to £100,000 a year was made available to the African Medical and Research Foundation for a period of three years from April 1979 in support of its programme of rural health care and clinical and basic services in East Africa. There was also a research project on the epidemiology and treatment of hydatid disease in Kenya which began in 1976 and was extended for a year into this period at a cost to ODA of £22,095 in 1979–80. A further accountable grant of up to £250,000 has been provided to AMREF in the current financial year in support of their programme of child health care in East Africa. These are the only proposals submitted by AMREF for ODA funding during the period in question.

Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs at what stage the proposed funding of the African Medical and Research Foundation was assessed for a population input by the Overseas Development Administration health and population division, in accordance with Government policy.

Mr. Neil Marten

The Government have contributed financial support for the activities of the African Medical and Research Foundation over the past nine years. Our funds have been provided in the form of general support for their programmes, and we are satisfied that the foundation has a firm commitment to child spacing through its wide variety of community health activities. All proposals are assessed against this background before any commitment is made.
