HC Deb 29 July 1982 vol 28 c621W
Mr. Skeet

asked the Minister for Trade whether the import of foreign GLS lamps complies with standards set by the British Standards Institute for safety requirements.

Dr. Vaughan

GLS lamps, whether imported or manufactured in the United Kingdom, are not required to comply with British standards as this would be contrary to the European Communities Council directive of 19 February 1973 73/23/EECOn the harmonisation of the laws of member States relating to electrical equipment designed for use within certain voltage limits".

GLS lamps must, however, satisfy the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 1975 and 1976. I am not aware of any imported lamps that fail to do so, but if my hon. Friend has evidence of this I shall look into the matter.
