HC Deb 28 July 1982 vol 28 cc553-4W
Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many sickle cell centres exist in each of the regional health authorities in England; how many have been included in forward planning; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

This information is not collected routinely, but since my hon. Friend's reply to the right hon. Member for Brent, East (Mr. Freeson) on 12 November 1981—[Vol. 12, c.169.]—we have been informed that new centres have opened in Brixton and Hackney and that others are planned for Islington and Liverpool. There may be further plans of which we have not yet been advised. Inner city partnership funds have been a useful source of help for health authorities wishing to develop screening and counselling services for sickle cell disease sufferers.
