HC Deb 28 July 1982 vol 28 c557W
Mr. Waller

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what are the average earnings per week of a staff nurse on basic salary maximum in 1981–82.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

The estimated average weekly earnings of a staff nurse on her maximum basic pay in 1981–82 was £121.75. This is 17 per cent.over basic pay.

Mr. McQuarrie

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what benefits hospital nurses receive in addition to their basic pay.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

Nurses working in the NHS are employed under the terms and conditions of service agreed by the Nurses and Midwives Whitley Council. These are set out in the Council's handbook, a copy of which is in the Library. Under those terms and conditions nurses of certain grades may earn enhancements to their basic pay for working overtime or at unsocial hours. In addition, a number of enhancements are available in recognition of particular duties or circumstances, such as being on call. On average, a nurse's total earnings in 1981–82 exceeded her basic pay by 16½ per cent.
