Mr. Dubs

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many calves and lambs were exported live in the latest 12-month period for (a) further fattening and (b) other purposes.

The numbers of calves, sheep and lambs intended for export from Great Britain and passed as fit to travel by Government veterinary officers in the 12 months to 3 July 1982 were as follows:

Calves under 6 months Sheep and Lambs
For further fattening 210,327 24,363
For other purposes:
(a) for immediate slaughter 109,690
(b) for breeding 633

During the same period exemptions from veterinary inspection under article 13 of the Export of Animals (Protection) Order 1981 and the arrangements which that order replaced were granted in respect of 95 sheep or lambs and eight calves.

Figures for sheep and lambs are not separately available.
