HC Deb 28 July 1982 vol 28 c584W
Mr. Gordon Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will describe the nature of disrepair of Claypotts Castle, Broughty Ferry, Dundee, which makes the building dangerous; how long the dangerous condition of the building has been known to him; and when remedial work will commence.

Mr. Allan Stewart

The building has suffered a gradual failure of the late mediaeval roof timbers and consequent shearing of the oak pegs securing the heavy Angus stone slates. Over the years strengthening and patching of the roof fabric had kept the trouble in check, but a survey in November 1981 revealed more rapid deterioration and the castle and its grounds were closed to the public as a safety measure, pending remedial works. It is planned to start these works later this year.
