HC Deb 19 July 1982 vol 28 c16W
55. Mr. David Young

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what economic and other help has been made available by the United Kingdom to help Dominica and other islands affected by a succession of hurricanes since 1980.

Mr. Neil Marten

The Windward Islands, particularly Dominica, were those most seriously affected by the hurricanes of 1979 and 1980. British bilateral aid to these Islands and for regional projects has amounted to over £11 million since 1980. A table showing annual expenditure by country will be published in theOfficial Report.

A prime target for assistance has been the banana industry.

By the end of this year more than £6 million will have been provided in support of the five-year Windward Islands banana development programme and for rehabilitation following hurricane damage.
