§ Mr. McMahonasked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether, following the accident in the prison workshop of Her Majesty's prison, Perth, in which a prisoner had fingers amputated, he is satisfied that such workshops meet the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work legislation.
§ Mr. Allan StewartI am satisfied that the employment of inmates in workshops in penal establishments is carried out in conformity with the requirements of the health and safety at work legislation. Such workshops are subject to inspection by the Health and Safety Executive and all penal establishments in Scotland have a health and safety committee with responsibility for keeping all aspects of health and safety under review.
