asked the Secretary of State for Industry what is his policy on the funding of civil aircraft and space projects.

Mr. Butcher

We have made clear to industry that we are willing to consider applications for financial assistance to civil aircraft projects. Any such application will be looked at on its merits as a commercial programme and against the background of prevailing economic conditions and competing demands for resources.

As far as space projects are concerned, I welcome the prospect of private sector funding in commercially-promising areas. But for the present the bulk of funding for projects will continue to be provided by the Government through the European Space Agency.
