HC Deb 06 July 1982 vol 27 c88W
Mr. Timothy Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what were the average weekly earnings in 1981 of a physiotherapist, a nurse and a hospital porter, respectively.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

For all physiotherapists and all nursing and midwifery staff, qualified and unqualified, the average weekly earnings were £121 and £105.90 respectively. Estimates of average earnings for individual groups of ancillary staff are not available. Most hospital porters are employed in the Ancillary Staffs Council's pay group 3. In 1981, estimated average weekly earnings for full-time men in pay group 3, which covers the majority of portering staff, were £100.49. Staff in London receive in addition London allowances of up to £13.68 a week.
