HC Deb 29 January 1982 vol 16 c446W
Dr. McDonald

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will publish in the Official Report a table showing the percentage gross domestic product spent on North Atlantic Treaty Organisation defence commitments by each of the member countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation for 1978–79, 1979–80 and 1980–81.

Mr. Blaker

The percentage of its gross domestic product spent on defence by the United Kingdom for the calendar years 1978, 1979 and 1980 was 4.6, 4.7 and 5.1 respectively. NATO publishes the relevant figures for its member countries each calendar year.

More than 90 per cent. of the United Kingdom's defence spending is devoted to our NATO commitments. Similar information is not available for other members of the Alliance.
