HC Deb 18 January 1982 vol 16 c36W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what special steps he and his counterparts in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation are taking in the light of recent events in Poland, to monitor and react to Warsaw Pact troop movements both inside and outside Poland.

Mr. Blaker

NATO monitors the activities of Warsaw Pact forces as part of its normal activities, and continues to do so in present circumstances. We are watching events in Poland closely and with great concern. Alliance Foreign Ministers met at NATO Headquarters on 11 January to review the situation. We are scrupulously avoiding any intervention in Poland's internal affairs and we expect the same of all the signatories of the Helsinki Final Act.
