HC Deb 18 January 1982 vol 16 cc26-7W
Mr. McCrindle

asked the Secretary of State for Transport in how many EEC countries it is compulsory to take professional driving tuition before applying for a driving test; and whether in those EEC countries where professional driving tuition is obligatory the subsequent driving test is more stringent than the British test.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

I regret that I do not have complete information about driving tuition requirements in all EEC countries. However, professional tuition before a test is not obligatory in France, Belgium, Holland, the Irish Republic and Great Britain, although I understand that it is in Germany, Denmark and Luxembourg. Methods of driver testing vary, but we believe the standard of driving required to pass the test in Great Britain is at least as high as in any other EEC country.
