asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many defence establishments in total there are in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales; how many employees there are in these four countries; and how many scientific and research establishments working on defence contracts there are in each of the countries.

[pursuant to his reply,December 1981, c. 416]: There are about 940 defence establishments in England, 100 in Northern Ireland, 230 in Scotland and 70 in Wales, including barracks, training areas, meteorological stations and ordnance factories. There are in addition careers information offices, Territorial Army and other volunteer centres, and married quarter estates throughout the United Kingdom.

At 1 October 1981 there were about 185, 100 Ministry of Defence civilians employed in England, 9, 300 in Wales, 21, 400 in Scotland and 3, 000 in Northern Ireland. These figures include staff in Royal ordnance factories.

Seventy-one universities, colleges and polytechnics have contracts from MOD to undertake scientific research. Of these 56 are in England, two in Northern Ireland, eight in Scotland and five in Wales.
