asked the Secretary of State for Industry what have been the total research and development costs of Concorde.

As indicated in the reply of 9 July 1981 to my hon. Friend the member for Rossendale (Mr. Trippier), the manufacturers' total development costs in Britain and France to completion of the airframe and engine development programmes on 31 December 1978 and 31 December 1980 respectively were £1, 126 million, divided as follows:—

* The equivalent of 6, 500 million francs.

Additionally, total expenditures at British Government research establishments up to 31 March 1981 were £77 million. All figures are at the prices and exchange rates prevailing when the costs were incurred.
