Mr. Rathbone

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is satisfied with the annual levels of recruitment to the prison service; and whether he will publish figures for such recruitment for the most recent five years for which figures are available.

Mr. Whitelaw

I am satisfied with the numbers coming forward for recruitment to most grades within the prison service. The detailed figures requested are published annually in the "Report on the Work of the Prison Department". Copies of the 1980 report, Cnind. 8228, and previous reports are in the Library. The 1981 report will be presented to Parliament in April.
