Mr. Tilley

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will place in the Library details of the new assessment scheme to identify racial prejudice among candidates for the Metropolitan Police force.

Mr. Mayhew

Details of the work in hand are not available in a form suitable for placing in the Library. I am writing to the hon. Member.

Mr. Tilley

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he has yet decided whether to implement the recommendation of Lord Scarman that there should be a separate offence under the police discipline code of racial prejudice.

Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether, pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for Macclesfield of 29 January, Official Report, column 452, he has yet reached a decision on the recommendation in the Scarman report that there should be a separate offence under the police discipline code of racial prejudice; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Whitelaw

I cannot at present add to the replies I gave to questions by my hon. Friend the Member for Macclesfield (Mr. Winterton) and my hon. Friend the Member for Petersfield (Mr. Mates) on 29 January and 4 February respectively.—[Vol. 16, c. 452; Vol. 17, c. 169.]
