asked the Secretary of State for Trade in respect of which maritime matters, and for which parts of the United Kingdom, his Department exercises responsibility.

Mr. Sproat

The principal responsibilities in the maritime field exercised by the Department of Trade, for the United Kingdom as a whole, cover policy towards the United Kingdom merchant fleet; the safety of merchant ships, including their construction and equipment; safety of navigation—including certain responsibilities under the Coast Protection Act 1949; the registration of United Kingdom vessels and seamen; the certification of seamen; manning; pilotage; civil marine search and rescue and the prevention and combating of marine pollution.
