HC Deb 24 February 1982 vol 18 cc418-9W
Mr. Guy Barnett

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he is satisfied that the standard of training maintained at the school for dental therapists in New Cross will be continued after 1983.

Mr. Geoffrey Finsberg

That is our intention

Mr. Guy Barnett

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what plans he has to dispose of the building, equipment and materials of the school for dental therapists at New Cross in 1983.

Mr. Geoffrey Finsberg

The building, equipment and materials are leased or owned by the school, which will have responsibility for their disposal. I anticipate that they will be used for National Health Service purposes.

Mr. Guy Barnett

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will estimate the cost of establishing a training course for a given number of students of dental therapy at a dental school.

Mr. Geoffrey Finsberg

The cost will depend on the facilities that already exist and on the number of students for whom arrangements need to be made.

Mr. Guy Barnett

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is (a) the unit cost of training a dental therapist at the school for dental therapists at New Cross and (b) the estimated unit cost of training a dental therapist at a dental school.

Mr. Geoffrey Finsberg

In the financial year 1980–81, the net cost, excluding student grants, of training both the first and the second year students, was about £564,000 and 49 students qualified. On this basis, the cost of training a dental therapist was approximately £11,500. The cost of training a dental therapist at a dental school will depend on the facilities that already exist.
