HC Deb 19 February 1982 vol 18 cc236-7W
Mr. John Wells

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether any further items have been accepted by the Government in satisfaction of estate duty or capital transfer tax.

Mr. Channon

Yes. A painting by Sir Anthony Van Dyck, "The Betrayal of Christ", offered on condition that it remains in situ at Corsham Court, near Bath, has been accepted in part satisfaction of estate duty.

The net cost, borne equally on the Votes of my Department and the Department of the Environment, is £702,635.
