asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the present strength of the Metropolitan Police force; what it was three years before; and what is the establishment figure.

Mr. Whitelaw

On 31 December 1981, the strength of the force was 25,075 compared with 21,961 on 31 December 1978. The current establishment is 26,615.
