§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will give, at the latest and most convenient date, the total revenue accruing to the Treasury from the dog licence, after allowing for the expenses connected with collection and the administration of the licensing scheme; and whether he will consider the abolition of the dog licence fee.
§ Mr. BrittanNo dog licence fee revenue accrues to the Consolidated Fund. About million per year goes, via the Post Office, to individual local authorities, in proportion to the number of licences purchased in their respective areas. Collection costs, borne on a Department of the Environment Vote, amount to around £3 million per annum and are not set off against revenue. There are no plans for the abolition of the dog licence fee, for the level of which the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has responsibility.
