HC Deb 18 February 1982 vol 18 cc206-7W
Mr. Strang

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what steps he is taking to encourage and promote cycling as a cheap and efficient alternative form of transport.

Mr. Rifkind

My right hon. Friend intends to take the opportunity of future roads legislation to seek powers to permit local highway authorities to provide cycle tracks.

Mr. Strang

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will appoint a regional cycling officer for Scotland.

Mr. Rifkind

I have designated one of my Department's road engineers at senior level to keep in touch with the needs of cyclists in relation to trunk roads and to provide such advice to local authorities as they may require.

Mr. Strang

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what resources are available from the Scottish Office for financing experimental cycle facilities.

Mr. Rifkind

There is no specific provision in current estimates for such expenditure.
