HC Deb 18 February 1982 vol 18 cc214-5W
Mr. Teddy Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many council tenants do not have the right to purchase their council homes because the freehold of the property is owned by an individual or body other than the council.

Mr. Stanley

This information has not been collected from individual authorities, but the Department's broad estimate is that there may be some 50,000 council tenants in England and Wales occupying dwellings in which their local authority has a leasehold interest.

Mr. Teddy Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will take steps to enable council tenants residing in properties where the leasehold only is owned by the council to purchase that leasehold right from the council.

Mr. Stanley

I refer my hon. Friend to the reply given to my hon. Friend the Member for Dartford (Mr. Dunn) by my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister on 11 February 1982.—[Vol. 17, c. 1111]
