§ Mr. Alfred Morrisasked the Secretary of State for Transport what representations he has received about the consequences for drivers of invalid carriages of the continued use of pre-1975 motorway slip road signs; what 74W action he has now taken; and if he will make a statement that will end the confusion caused by the continued use of these signs.
§ Mr. Kenneth ClarkeI have received no representations other than that submitted by the right hon. Gentleman on behalf of the Barrow and District Council for the Disabled. The motorway traffic regulations were amended in 1971 to permit invalid carriages over 5 cwt. to use the motorway. In view of the problems occasioned by the survival of older signs at a few motorway entry points, we 75W are arranging for these to be replaced as quickly as possible. I understand too that my right hon. Friend the Secretary for the Home Department is reminding chief constables of the legal position.
