Mr. Foster

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what are the most recent figures for the distribution of health manpower in the United Kingdom for each English region, Scotland and Wales as categorised by (a) general medicine practitioners, (b) hospital doctors,(c) general dental practitioners, (d) nurses and midwives and (e) total manpower.

  1. 1. The expenditure figures used are taken the annual accounts submitted by health authorities and include revenue and capital expenditure.
  2. 2. Total expenditure is inclusive of the cost of hospital, community health and family practitioner services and also contains expenditure on the provision of ambulance, blood transfusion, mass radiography, various other services and administration.
  3. 3. The figures for all three countries do not include the cost of certain services provided centrally (for example, by the Dental Estimates Board and the Prescription Pricing Authority).
  4. 4. The figures for Scotland differ in content in some degree from those for English Regions and Wales because annual accounts are not maintained on exactly the same basis.
  5. 5.The expenditure incurred by the 12 London Postgraduate Boards of Governors, has not been included.
  6. 6.The figures for the four Thames regions are influenced by the payment of London Weighting allowance to staff employed in the relevant areas.
  7. 7.The population figures used are the mid-year estimates of resident population for 1980—the latest available. It is emphasised that these figures make no allowance for people resident in one area who receive treatment in another or for the differences in morbidity and age/sex structure of particular populations.
