§ Mr. Carter-Jonesasked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list the figures for 1981 for (a) the average number of mobility allowances in payment, (b) the number of awards for fixed terms which expired, (c) the number of renewal claims for expired awards, (d) the number, respectively, of renewal claims and reviews during the currency of an award which resulted in (i) retention of the allowance, and (ii) withdrawal of the allowance, (e) the number of deaths of recipients of the allowance, (f) the number of new claims for the allowance and (g) the number of new awards.

- (a) Average number of awards in payment in 1981–197,000.
- (b) Awards for fixed terms which expired in 1981–16,000.
- (c) Renewal claims received in 1981 following expiry of previous awards—16,300.
- (d) Renewal claims decided in 1981. Information is available only for claims decided from end October.
- (i) retention of allowance—2,410
- (ii) disallowance of renewal claim—470.
- Reviews carried out in 1981:
- (i)retention allowance—40 (estimate)
- (ii)withdrawal of allowance—160 (estimate).
- (e) Deaths of recipients of the allowance in 1981–11,400.

§ Mr. Carter-Jonesasked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) how many people each year since 1976 have been refused mobility allowance on the grounds that they would not be unable or virtually unable to walk if they habitually wore or used a prosthesis or an artificial aid which was suitable in their case;
(2) how many people in each year since 1976 have had their mobility allowance withdrawn on the grounds that they have subsequently been fitted with a prosthesis or artificial aid which renders them able or virtually able to walk.
