HC Deb 09 February 1982 vol 17 c343W
75. Mr. Hooley

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the current value of child benefit compared with the rate payable in January 1980, expressing both figures in constant 1980 values.

Mrs. Chalker

The current rate of child benefit, at £5.25 a week, would be equivalent to £4.17 at January 1980 values, allowing for movements in the general index of retail prices between January 1980 and December 1981—the latest available figures. The rate of child benefit payable in January 1980 was £4.

Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will consider an increase in child benefit to cover the cost of school uniforms.

Mrs. Chalker

No. Child benefit is a contribution to the family income to help with the general cost of bringing up children. The intention has never been to provide for specific items.
