§ Mr. William SheltonThe joint project of the Science and Engineering Research Council with the South African astronomical observatory was referred to in my reply to the hon. Member of 23 December last. The Department does not know of any other formal agreements for scientific cooperation with South Africa on the part of national scientific institutions within my right hon. Friend's field of responsibility. Informal contacts between individual scientists and laboratories are developed and maintained on an ad hoc basis.
