§ Mr. Murphyasked the Attorney-General if Her Majesty's Government will consider the question of equal parental rights after divorce with a view to amending the law.
The Solicitor-GeneralWhen determining questions of custody and upbringing of a child of the family, the courts are required to treat the welfare of the child as the first and paramount consideration. The parents' respective rights must be subject to this first and paramount consideration but, subject to this consideration, their respective rights are equal and no change in the law is either necessary or desirable.
