HC Deb 03 February 1982 vol 17 c162W
Mr. Spriggs

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what population changes have taken place in each of the last three years for which this information is avialable, up to the latest convenient date.

Mr. Geoffrey Finsberg

The latest published estimate of the population of England and Wales is 49.24 million at 30 June 1980. In the 12 months ended mid-1979 the population increased by 54,000 and in the 12 months to mid-1980 by 73,000. The increase in the 12 months to mid-1981 is provisionally estimated at 2,000.

These figures may be revised slightly when further results from the 1981 census are published later this year.
