asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make a statement on the operation of the young workers scheme.

The scheme opened on 4 January and we have already received about 16,000 applications.

This is an encouraging start, and I hope that many more employers will ask for leaflets and read about the financial support which is available to them.
