HL Deb 02 February 1982 vol 426 cc1287-8WA
Lord Boston of Faversham

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What was the expenditure on educational and training work in penal establishments in each of the years from 1975 to 1981 (or to the latest convenient date); and whether they will give (a) the comparative figures in real terms and (b) the figures expressed as a proportion of the total expenditure of the Prison Service.

Lord Belstead

The available information for expenditure on educational and related training work in penal establishments in each of the years 1976–1981 and its expression as a proportion of the total expenditure on the Prison Service is as follows:

1 2 3 4 5
Financial Year Total Expenditure on Prisons Vote (Actual Expenditure) Education and Related Training Expenditure (Actual Expenditure) Col. 3 as a Proportion of Col. 2 Education and Related Training Expenditure (Constant Prices at 1976–77 Base

The table does not include expenditure on physical education, industrial training or construction industry training; it also excludes library and vocational training staff expenditure, which, I regret, could be indentified only at disproportionate cost, by examining a large number of records.
