HC Deb 01 February 1982 vol 17 c15W
Mr. Canavan

asked the Lord Privy Seal whether he will allocate more funds for the education of overseas students.

Mr. Neil Marten

Additional money has been made available this year under our training programme for the Governments of developing countries. We expect to spend about £42 million in the current year on training schemes compared with about £37 million in 1980–81. About 4,600 new awards are expected to be made against 3,900 last year.

A substantial level of training will be maintained under the aid programme both bilaterally and through the Commonwealth scholarship and fellowship plan but I cannot yet give a figure for likely expenditure next year.
