§ Mr. Meacherasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the number of persons who died in police custody in 1981 and, separately, in the first half of 1982, giving in each case the date of death, the age at death and the sex of the person concerned, the police station where the death occurred, the police force concerned, the cause of death and the inquest verdict.
§ Mr. MayhewInformation on deaths in police custody is collected centrally on an annual basis; available information for 1981 was published in Home Office statistical bulletin number 6/82 and the annual reports of Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Constabulary and the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis. Information for the calendar year 1982 is not yet available.
