HC Deb 22 December 1982 vol 34 c536W
Mr. Peter Bottomley

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will list all non-statutory bodies to which his Department has made grants for 1981–82 and 1982–83 showing the name of the organisation, the amount of grant and the powers under which that is made; and if he will give similar information for grant-aid by other statutory bodies for which his Department is responsible.

Mr. Pattie

The Ministry of Defence provides financial assistance to a number of bodies by means of grants-in-aid, all of which have been approved by the Treasury. These are listed individually in the Defence Estimates—Vote 1, section K—but the following is the information requeated in respect of non-statutory bodies:

Amount of grant
1981–82 1982–83
£ £
Royal British Legion 160,000 160,000
Council of Voluntary Welfare Work 336,000 145,000
Naval and marine museums 40,000 46,000
National Army Museum 70,000 80,000
Royal Air Force Museum 60,000 70,000
Royal Aeronautical Society 1,000 1,000
Scott Polar Research Institute 20,000 20,000
Royal United Services Institute 24,000 35,000
Royal Hospital Chelsea 2,842,000

In the case of the Royal hospital, Chelsea, the grant-in-aid arrangement came into effect only on 1 April 1982. Before then the financial support provided by the Ministry of Defence was funded from a number of Vote subheads.
