HC Deb 22 December 1982 vol 34 cc534-5W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what percentage of the gross domestic product was produced by the textile and clothing industries in the most recent period for which figures are available.

Mr. MacGregor

I regret that firmly based estimates are not available for the textiles and clothing industries alone. The percentage of gross domestic product produced by the textiles, clothing and footwear industries in 1979 was 2.2 per cent., as derived from tables 3.1 and 3.2 in "National Income and Expenditure", 1982 edition. Departmental estimates suggest that the percentage was about 1.7 per cent. in the first half of 1982.
