§ Mr. Deakinsasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if, when issuing further advice to local education authorities on curriculum matters, he will include reference to development education.
§ Dr. BoysonOur guidance document "The School Curriculum", published in March 1981, commended a list of broad educational aims which included helping pupils "to understand the world in which they live, and the interdependence of individuals, groups and nations". We have at present no plans to issue further advice on this matter.
§ Mr. Deakinsasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what courses on development education are available to students at teacher training colleges; and if he will encourage education authorities to ensure that the subject is available as an option within each college.
§ Dr. BoysonDevelopment studies, whether under this or some other title, are more likely to be an element of a course-for example, in geography-than a course in their own right. Options designated as development studies are, however, available at Crewe and Alsager college of higher education, and at Bulmershe college of higher education, Reading.
Inasmuch as developments studies represent a dimension of a wider discipline, it is a matter for those teaching the courses to determine in conjunction with the validating bodies.
