HC Deb 21 December 1982 vol 34 c445W
54. Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what proposals he has to reduce the number of young people presently unemployed.

Mr. Peter Morrison

The Government's success in bringing down inflation will help protect and create jobs for young people and adults. The youth opportunities programme is currently providing young people with courses of work experience and training and we have guaranteed an offer of a place on the programme by Christmas to unemployed 16 and 17-year-old school leavers.

Next year the new youth training scheme, which will replace the current programme with a full year's foundation training will mean that no 16-year-old school leaver need be unemployed.
