§ Mrs. Dunwoodyasked the Chancellor of the Ezchequer what is the actual or estimated cost of the married man's tax allowance for each financial year from 1980–81 to 1985–86.
§ Mr. Ridley[pursuant to his reply, 16 December 1982, c. 212]: Estimates for years up to and including 1983–84 are as follows:
£ million 1980–81 3,000 1981–82 3,000 1982–83 3,400 1983–84 3,600 These figures are the revenue cost of the excess of the married man's allowance, including married age allowance where appropriate, over the corresponding single person's allowance. The costs are for a full year at the income and allowance levels current in each of the years in question. The cost for 1983–84 is estimated on the 506W basis of the 6 per cent. indexation of allowances and so on, and other economic assumptions contained in the autumn statement. Estimates for future years are not available.
