§ Mr. Norman Hoggasked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many deaths have occurred from diseases related to cigarette smoking in each year since 1975 in Scotland.
§ Mr. John MacKayCigarette smoking is a contributory factor in many deaths. The total numbers of deaths from three selected causes are given in the following table. By no means all the deaths from these causes are related to cigarette smoking, but research has suggested that in the case of deaths from lung cancer as many as 90 per cent. for males and 40 per cent. of females may be related to smoking; of deaths from bronchitis 75 per cent. for males and 60 per cent. for females; and of deaths from ischaemic heart disease 25 per cent. for males and 20 per cent. for females.
