§ Mr. Woolmerasked the Minister for Trade in what way he intends to conform with International Labour Organisation recommendation 138 to ensure adequate welfare facilities for seafarers.
§ Mr. SproatILO recommendations are meant to provide guidance for the development of national policy and practice and the Government will continue to be guided by most of the provisions of recommendation No. 138 concerning seafarers' welfare. I consider that adequate welfare facilities for seafarers in United Kingdom ports are being provided by the Merchant Navy Welfare Board and the voluntary societies, whose activities are co-ordinated by the board acting both centrally and through local port welfare committees.
