Mr. Ashton

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what productivity increase in output per man there has been in the steel industry in each of the last four years.

Mr. Butcher

Crude steel production per person employed in the United Kingdom steel industry increased by 6 per cent. in 1978 and by 11 per cent. in 1979. The steel dispute in 1980 led to a sharp fall—of 36 per cent.—in that year, followed by a strong recovery—of 90 per cent.—in 1981. The average annual change between 1979 and 1981 was an increase of 10 per cent.—Source: EUROSTAT.
