asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many women have benefited from the statutory maternity pay scheme in each year since its inception in April 1977.

The numbers of women who have received maternity pay and in respect of whom rebate has been paid to the employer by my Department are as follows:

6 April 1977 – 31 March 1978 67,366
1 April 1978 – 31 March 1979 107,953
1 April 1979 – 31 March 1980 120,555
1 April 1980 – 31 March 1981 121,977
1 April 1981 – 31 March 1982 128,578
1 April 1982 – 31 October 1982 68,120

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how much per annum in surplus funds is being transferred from the maternity pay fund to the redundancy pay fund.

Mr. Waddington

No surplus funds are being transferred from the maternity pay fund to the redundancy fund. The income of the maternity pay fund was diverted into the redundancy fund, as a temporary measure only, from 1 March 1981 to 31 January 1982.
