HC Deb 06 December 1982 vol 33 cc406-7W
Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Defence for what purpose HMS "Fearless" visited Venice in November; how long she was there; and why she carried a London taxi secured on deck.

Mr. Blaker

During a routine training deployment to the Mediterranean as the Dartmouth training ship, HMS "Fearless" paid an informal visit to Venice for rest and recreation from 11 to 15 November. The London taxi on her deck was purchased and is maintained privately by members of the ship's company of HMS "Fearless" for use ashore. It is carried on occasions at the discretion of the commanding officer and only when to do so will not interfere with operational activity.
